Latest update on Missing 7 month old Shannon Lea DedrickPosted by: YourTurnToHelp on Nov 3, 2009 Tagged in: Untagged
|
Search teams still looking for missing 7 month old Shannon Lea Dedrick.
Police not releasing much new information other than a timeline of the dissappearance.
Authorities are reporting the Shannon Dedrick was last seen at 3 a.m. when her parents went to bed. They believe she disappeared from her home sometime before 8 a.m. Saturday. Her parents didn't report her missing until around 11 a.m. (hmmmm)
The sheriff's office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement would not identify the girl's parents, saying only that the couple is talking to investigators. They also would not discuss why the girl wasn't reported missing until so late in the morning Sunday.

Authorities believe the baby disappeared sometime before 8 a.m. Saturday. Her parents reported her missing at 11:23 a.m., the Washington County Sheriff's Office said. It wasn't clear why it apparently took more than three hours to alert police about the child's disappearance.

(I wonder if the "person of interest" is one of the parents.)

well I can vouch recently for this le
I lived in bay county for fifteen years , They have solved some pretty gruesome hard cases I think they will solve this one, I don't know how they know they didnt see her at 8 but didn't report her till 11 works but I do my sister said they are being very closed lipped on this, so usually when they don't ask questions to public they already have many answers.

DeB, that makes perfect sense and given that this is in Florida, with their liberal laws, it only makes more sense that they (LE) keep things from the public until they are forced to release information (after someone has been charged.)

I found a messageboard on an article from the local news where a poster claimed to be the relative of the mother. Supposedly both parents suffer from a form of mental retardation (I realize the p.c. term is mentally challenged) and that the infant has the same physical characteristic (disease) as the mother (a large, malformed head). The mother had said she did not want the baby and supposedly she has confessed to taking the infant into the woods and hiding her in some leaves, hence the search. Authorities are keeping a tight lip, but this alleged relative has told all. The father has been cleared and the mother has not yet been charged because they are looking to find the infant first. I will google like crazy this afternoon and find the link I read....

CHIPLEY – Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock confirmed that there is a “person of interest” in the disappearance of 7-month old Shannon Lea Dedrick some time Saturday. Aside from shooting down rumors, however, Haddock gave little new information about the case.
Haddock also said that Internet rumors that the mother had confessed to burying the baby were not true, and there was no search underway at the old landfill on South Boulevard. The site is being used for the various search teams participating in the hunt for the missing child.

NewsChannel 7 Confirms The Names of Missing Chipley Baby's Parents.....Christina Mercer and Rusty Dedrick.
We spoke with Shannon's great aunt, Lynda Padgett, who says they have also been left in the dark about what's happening.
"The clock is ticking away and she's just an innocent little child who you know, just deserves better."
She also says she's not sure if Christina would hurt Shannon.
"I think if Tina did something then she was definitely not in her right mind when she did it. I really can't say that I think or don't think that she's capable of it."
But some people believe it is possible.
"Not the father, I wouldn't think the father, no, not at all."
"He's too heartbroken and distraught."
"I wouldn't know what to say about the mom but not the father."

In an interview Tuesday, Shannon’s baby sitter Susan Baker claimed the little girl’s mother said she wished her daughter “would disappear” weeks before the tiny infant vanished.
In an August e-mail provided to The News Herald, Baker begged Gov. Charlie Crist’s office to intervene, urgently claiming “that child needs help and no one is helping her.”
The next day, Baker said, she received a call from a Child Protective Services worker who said he would investigate. She said she didn’t hear of any progress after that.
DCF, Digre said, received two reports on the family. The allegations included marijuana use around Shannon and a complaint that she had been shaken.
Doctors found no evidence of the latter, Digre said.
The family entered treatment programs and received help from food stamps and a Women, Infants and Children program. Home visitors checked on progress and DCF stayed in contact with Shannon’s pediatrician, Digre said.
“The reality is, for a number of months, we have had a lot of involvement with this family in many, many ways,” he said.
Baker eventually detailed a night two weeks ago when Mercer sat on a bed and “said she wished that Shannon would disappear because Shannon’s not Rusty’s daughter, and she wished that Shannon was gone, so she could have a baby with Rusty.”
It disturbed Baker to see Shannon’s parents so uncaring, she said. She claimed there were many times she was allowed to take Shannon away for “as long as I wanted.”

if these people were mentally challenged what the heck were they doing smoking pot?
then the state gives them food stamps and wic?
if they didn't spend their money on pot, they could afford food!
i understand that women suffer from baby blues, but if your metally challenged and your suffering from the blues i would think that a laser radar would be on you!
I do not forsee a good ending here
plus that woman stated she was allowed to take the baby 'for as long as she wanted' this mother could have just given her baby away to someone, for good

Strange new twist!
BREAKING NEWS: Babysitter Suspect in Missing Chipley Infant Case
In an exclusive report, NewsChannel 7 is reporting that the babysitter for a missing Chipley baby may be a suspect in the disappearance.
Babysitter Susan Baker told a newspaper she had warned the governor in august that the baby, 7-month- old Shannon Dedrick, could be in danger. However, a check of NewsChannel 7 archives shows Baker and her husband James was extradited from Chipley to Beaufort, South Carolina nine years ago in connection with the 1987 disappearance of their 3-year-old son Paul.
The boy has never been found. Baker had been the boy’s babysitter, and married his father after his divorce. The boy later disappeared. When she was returned to South Carolina in 2000, Baker was sentenced to prison for the abuse of the couples daughter. That sentence was later commuted to time served. Contacted with this information this morning, the Washington County Sheriff’s office said they had become aware of babysitter Baker's background.

More on the Baker's. This is the woman that is so concerned about Shannon's well being? Something doesn't fit!
The couple were arrested in connection with the boy's disappearance and were later charged with aggravated assault and battery for allegedly severely beating him before he vanished March 5, 1987, according to the documents.
"Susan Baker told police she put him down for a nap that day and returned to find him missing," the synopsis says. "The Deputies and police searched the area around their home for several days but found no trace of the little boy.
"After the disappearance, the couple's 6-year-old daughter was removed by state social workers who discovered broken bones and sores on her body."
Susan Baker was convicted of beating the little girl and sentenced to 10 years in prison, the case documents say.

Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock was crying as he delivered the news that baby Shannon Dedrick was found alive.
The Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement called for a news conference around 11:00 p.m Wednesday for 1:00 a.m. Thursday.
Shannon was reported missing at 11:30 a.m. Halloween morning by her mother. Authorities believe she went missing some time between 3:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Saturday from the bedroom of her parents on Brown Street in Chipley.
Wednesday investigators began looking into possible connections between Shannon’s disappearance and the disappearance of her reported baby sitter’s step-son. Susan Baker’s son, Paul, was reported missing in 1987 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, his body was never found. Authorities in South Carolina extradited Susan and her husband Paul from Washington County in 2000 on charges relating to the disappearance but the grand jury did not indict them.
Haddock says Shannon was found in a box under Susan and Paul’s bed around 9:55 p.m. Wednesday. Shannon was rushed to Northwest Florida Hospital. Susan and Paul Baker are in custody. The mother of Shannon, Christina Mercer is also in police custody. The investigation is on-going.
News 13 will have all the details as soon as they released.

Susan and Paul Baker are in custody. Shannon’s mother, Chrystina Mercer is also in police custody. The investigation is on-going. They are not releasing the charges at this time.
Family members of Shannon were also at the news conference.
Family members of Shannon’s father, Rusty Dedrick, tell News 13 that Shannon Baker is related to Dedrick. They also say Dedrick and Mercer are not married and are no longer together.
The maternal grandmother of Shannon came to the news conference all the way from Texas. She tells News 13 she had suspicions that her daughter might be involved in the case some how.
Both sides of the family were preparing for the worst. But when they learned she was alive it was a range of emotions from cheers to tears. Sheriff Haddock brought the baby over to Shannon’s grandmother and aunt so they could hug and kiss her.
The baby was taken back to the hospital after the news conference. It’s not clear at this time who will get custody of baby Shannon but both sides of the family tell News 13 that would be willing to care for her.
News 13 will have all the details as soon as they released.

I was on my toes for the last 3 days, panicking for a child that is not mine, but a child that I have fallen in love with all the while hoping and praying that she would be ok. I cannot believe this wonderful news. The possibility of her being found alive was so small, it is AMAZING that she is not dead. I cried tears of joy as I read the news that she was alive! Thank you god....Hope they find a loving home for shannon

im very very happy this baby was found alive
but i have reservations on whether the baby should return to where she was living, i think that baby should go to a family that would want and care for her
if she goes to the mothers parents, chances are that mother will have her unsupervised again, and that child will once again be in danger because of the mothers unstability
if she goes to the father, will her continue his relationship with this mother? will he continue smoking pot in the home? if this child does in fact have health problems, which have been speculated, i'm not thinking going to a home of a pot smoker is the best situation.
to hell with the rights of parents that put their children in harms way
i think this little baby would have a much better shot at a beautiful life if given to someone who would cherish her and put her needs before their own. jmo

I read the article this morning on CNN and this excerpt stood out to me:
"Miss Baker was of interest to begin with," Haddock said. "There [were] things we were working on yesterday ... Once things [were] progressing in the news media, we had to rush ourselves a little further."
Once things were progressing in the news media? That concerns me because I think of all the other high profile cases that have still not been solved and wonder how much the media played a part in letting the killers know to do something differently to avoid being caught. I hope our own diligence in trying to help find answers doesn't ever hinder an investigation either...that would just crush me.

I was searching for the initial missing child report on Paul Baker from Beaufort,SC. I remember reading something about him from his mother who had strong suspicions about Susan. I haven't found the article yet.
On the link below is a picture of this precious little boy.

this link will take you to missingkids.com. I hope LE can use this to solve the case of Baby boy Paul Baker.
Did this woman think she could get away with this twice. Looking at Susan Baker's past history, I think little Shannon was in danger. jmo
Thank God they found her!

Yeah Dee
she was found in a locked chest with a hasp on it a lock stuffed under the bed behind linen she had been there 12 hours. Could be what happened to the other child. She was found with other things which leads me to be believe she was not coming out alive.

It is hard to believe they actually thought they could just tell the media such a tale and NOT have LE come to Bakers house and do a search. How long could she have lasted until she ran out of air you wonder.

OMG!! How sick this woman is!!
That box looked like a coffin, I'm sorry to say that. What a precious little thing she is and a real survivor. At least now I'm sure her life will take on a new meaning. Not the abuse and neglect that this little angel had to endure.
I'll be praying for her.
