Sandra Cantu case: a Xanax connection?

Posted by: Tim in Colorado

Commentary: Substance Melissa Huckaby is accused of using on two others shown on police log to be a tranquilizer of the same description

Hat tip: Logical (May 23 Crimesearchers discussion on blog post, “Melissa Huckaby charged with poisonings”)

As I was looking into today’s announcement of a true-bill indictment of Melissa Huckaby on five counts, including the murder, rape and drugging of Sandra Cantu, I revisited a Crimesearchers discussion back in May in which research hound extraordinaire Logical dug up an article from the Tracy Press (http://tinyurl.com/pnp6lx) about an encounter with Daniel Plowman, the drugging victim named in the fifth count of the indictment. In that article, it was revealed that the police log showed one of Huckaby’s other alleged drugging victims, the otherwise-unnamed seven-year-old “Jane M. Doe” (referenced in counts three and four), was “high on benzodiazepine.”

Being no medical expert, I looked up benzodiazepine in an online medical dictionary (Healthline.com) and was flabbergasted to discover that the form of benzodiazepine known as chlordiazepoxide is the formula that is commercially marketed by the Pfizer pharmaceutical company under the brand name Xanax! Looking at the incident with the seven-year-old described in the indictment, I noted that it dates back to January 17, 2009, and at that time discussion was still hot and heavy about toxicology and the possibility that Casey Anthony may have used Xanax as a babysitter—we do know that in one text conversation with Jesse Grund Casey mentioned the possibility of “hit[ting] up Annie” for Xanax. We have since learned that, ostensibly, toxicology reports have come up either negative or inconclusive with respect with Caylee, but the coincidence is still striking, and does raise at least the outside chance that copycat crimes might be in view.

Having taken a step back from the Cantu case, it looks likely to me that Huckaby may have been working her way up to the degree of crime for which she was eventually arrested; and it also occurred to me that, in a manner of speaking, she could have been attempting to turn the tables on having to take anti-anxiety drugs herself. (Whatever could possess anyone—much less a Sunday School teacher—to add murder and rape to this kind of crime, however, is far beyond my comprehension.) Please, please, bear in mind that in this commentary I cannot say with certainty that any of this is true, but merely possible, and I raise these issues for discussion.

Huckaby Indicted On Murder, Rape, Kidnap Charges By Jury

Melissa Huckaby reacts to indictment

STOCKTON - A San Joaquin grand jury has indicted a Sunday school teacher on charges she kidnapped, raped and killed an 8-year-old girl and drugged two other people.

Twenty-eight-year-old Melissa Huckaby broke down in tears as Judge Linda Lofthus read the indictment against her Monday.

Prosecutors convened a grand jury in late July rather than hold a preliminary hearing to determine whether Huckaby would stand trial. A trial date has not been set.

Huckaby previously pleaded not guilty to murdering 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond in April.

She also pleaded not guilty to charges drugging a 7-year-old girl as well as a 37-year-old man, whom police believe she had dated.

That is a good catch Tim. I never realized that whatever drug Huckaby was using on people could either be Xanax or closely related to Xanax. There is an outside chance that it was a copycat crime, but I don't believe it was. As sick as Huckaby and Casey both are, I get the feeling that they killed for very different reasons. It seems that Casey killed because she wanted freedom from raising a child, was mad about the fight she had with Cindy, and was jealous of the attention that Caylee got from George and Cindy. Huckaby seems to be a twisted, sexual deviant who wanted to cover up her crime. It is sad that the authorities didn't act on the drugging of the seven-year-old when it was reported in January instead of waiting until after Huckaby killed Sandra Cantu. I think if they had, Sandra might still be alive today.

I'm sure we'll see some computer searches when this thing goes to trial.
We all have searched for chloroform on our computers by now. She's going to get hers, regardless.

I think that you are absolutely right with the fact that Melissa Huckaby was working her way up to the ultimate crime of murder. With her history of drugging people, then moving on to kidnapping the young girl in her trailer park, drugging her and then bringing her home. (Who knows what happened during that period of time in which the young girl was w/ Huckaby.) Her next victim was Sandra Cantu in which she did the same, kidnapped, drugged, and then murdered. This is the way that most serial killers work. Starting off with "lesser" crimes and eventually leading to murder. There is no doubt in my mind that she would have continued on with her crimes had she not been cought. As far as any connection between MH and Casey Anthony, I personally think that the only commonality between the two are the fact that they both murdered young children and Xanax was involved in both crimes. They both murdered for very different reasons with completely different MO's. Melissa Huckaby probably had access to xanax as it is commonly prescribed as an anti-anxiety medication and she had ongoing psychological issues. Casey Anthony had Xanax (illegally purchased) for both recreational purposes and most likely to sedate her daughter and use it as a baby sitter.

Interesting. There's a woman here in Houston who's on trial now for mutilating her 3-month-old son's testicles and penis with a knife. Luckily, the child survived and is now with a loving, caring foster mom. This poor little baby will have to have multiple surgeries to repair the damage this witch did. It angers me to think about it.
The mother confessed and ironically, she was using Xanax (lots of it) and like you, I thought of Casey. Could this be the key to these horrifying crimes against children?
I never knew Xanax could have such an effect on people. I know Ritalin, which is a stimulant, when given to a hyperactive child, has a calming effect. Maybe with some people, Xanax has the opposite effect too. IDK.
I've never heard of Casey having a drug test?? Maybe LE should. She hasn't had a hair cut since she's been in jail.
LE could start from there.

If I remember correctly, there was no Xanax found in Caylee's toxicology report. Also the ME was unable to detect chloroform. (just a reminder)
If Xanax can transform these individuals, imagine what it could do to Cindy who I'd bet 1/2 my retirement on, she's been using for years. Watching her erratic behavior, especially when I read she beat a crucifix (cross) that was left in front of her home. She beat it out of anger after they found Caylee. It's horrifying to think that people like her are walking the streets like ticking time bombs. Xanax?
I never knew.

This is the story of the X-cheerleader mom I was referring to who mutilated her baby's genitals. This case also has a Xanax connection.

Tim, you may have hit on something.

Very well written Tim. I personal feel that Caylee was definitely drugged by the killer. Unfortunately, the time period that her remains were exposed to the elements has washed away the proof.
I pray to god....that justice is brought in both of these cases. I think a LOUD and CLEAR message needs to be sent that these behaviors are reprehenceable. A strong sentence will hopefully do the trick!

In all honesty I hope and pray that Huckaby did drug Sandra, because I would hate for that beautiful girl to have endured what she did knowing what was going on, all I can hope for as that she was passed out from being drugged, or unconscious. I wish the same for Caylee, however I believe that Caylee was not drugged but duct tape placed over her mouth and put in the trunk with chloroform, to knock her out which in turn killed her. I don't think Caylee was given Xanax.

butterfly,
You made a great point. Yes, I hope little Sandra was unaware of what was happening to her too. The same for Caylee, whatever the situation was. It's so hard to even imagine children being tortured by people they trust, but as I'm learning, it happens more than we know.
I think about the Gary and Garrett Coleman too. At some point they had to look in his eyes. So sad.

Does anyone off hand know when or if a trial date has been scheduled for this case? I may have bypassed it along here somewhere, I just was not certain. Thanks in advance!

My heart feels so heavy when I hear about this case and see pictures of beautiful Sandra. As the mother of a 4 year old girl, my heart bleeds for Sandra's parents. I hope in time they can cherish the memories of their beautiful daughter, as I believe that she would want them to live a full life - for her. As for the death penalty for Huckaby, I have mixed feelings. She is clearly mentally ill. Why didn't someone intervene back in January? Andy Caylee? I know it happens all the time, but it's hard to think about a mother killing her own child. I'm not a fan of the death penalty as I prefer to let murderers rot in jail. I don't believe they should receive the priviliges that they do. Lock them up and throw away the key - that seems more punishment than death. But when someone is mentally ill? I don't know - is DP the right thing?
